Overview

Participants
Offered at both the San Diego and Denver centers, Brain Highways enrichment classes are for everyone—the child who may be struggling with a subject and the child who is already doing well.  Novel approaches that parallel how the brain learns naturally make it possible for all kids to succeed, while advanced content material challenges kids who have already acquired the “basics.”

Track Record
Each of the Brain Highways enrichment class curriculum was written by Nancy Sokol Green. Over the past 15 years, such curriculum has been the focus of many teacher-trainings throughout San Diego County.

In all cases, Green retained the copyright of her materials so that Brain Highways families may also benefit.

The Classes

Kidwriter Class
Turns out that much of what published writers and editors know about writing never makes it into the classroom.  That’s why these concepts are the focus of the Kidwriter curriculum.  (Curious what you know? Take the Kidwriter Quiz to find out.)

Should your child expect anything that seems like prior writing instruction when participating in the Kidwriter class? No. For example, kids become doctors who cure grammar diseases, shoppers who cruise the Sensory Word Mall, producers who create Hollywood sentences, and more.  Participants also receive the popular Kidwriter books that reinforce key writing concepts and become valuable resources beyond the class.

In short, kids who think they dislike writing gain confidence as they easily acquire concepts that are generally unknown to their parents and teachers, and kids who already love writing . . .  soar with the new information.

Alphabet Class
Parents participate with their kids in multisensory activities that focus on writing letters. The unique curriculum also teaches parents why children learn so easily with this novel approach.

Math Class
Kids engage in original, hands-on activities and games to develop a strong number sense that then becomes a solid foundation for more advanced math skills. Kids who may have previously struggled learning number facts via a traditional way delight in their success with the new and different approaches offered in the class.  The math curriculum also presents a strong connection between math concepts and how such knowledge is applicable to daily life.

Reading Class (Not currently offered)
Kids wake up their brains as they participate in innovative activities that focus on decoding, beginning and ending sounds, consonant blends, sight words, word families, reading comprehension skills and strategies. Speed reading techniques and how to read with expression and fluency are also part of lessons presented in this creative way to teach reading.
