The Brain Highways Spring 2012 Kidwriter Class
April 18, 25; May 2, 9, 23; 4:30 -6:30

Background Information
Nancy Sokol Green, the author of the Kidwriter curriculum, based the content on what she learned only after she had become a published writer.  As a consultant, she first taught the program in various public schools and then offered it as teacher trainings so more kids could participate.

Why We Offer the Kidwriter Class
  • To prove that writing can be entertaining and enjoyable when we’re moving and using all parts of our brain (there is absolutely no “pain” with this approach)
  • To teach writing concepts that are generally not presented in traditional classrooms
  • To provide a unique editing approach that allows kids the time to master concepts successfully

Participants and Staff
We enroll a maximum of 10 kids, with a ratio of staff to kids that is usually 1:3 or 1:5.  Participants are 8-13 years old.

Number of Classes
The Kidwriter class meets for a total of five times over a five-week period.

Sample Sneak Preview Questions (that are answered in class)
  • Which punctuation kingdom will rule the land?
  • What will be stocked at the Sensory Store Mall?
  • Which live relatives are at the dead word’s burial service?
  • What are the four cheapest words (and why are they worthless)?
  • Who has been stricken with Fragment Disease? Do the grammar doctors know a cure?
  • How did a comma actually save a person’s life? (This is a true story)
  • Who will dance the Three-Step? The Dash? The Semi?
  • Who will tire first during the Paragraph Break Challenge?

Kidwriter Detective Editing Approach
The class also teaches the participants’ parents how to become supportive Kidwriter editors. Kids love this unique kind of editing (versus having someone put a red pen through something they wrote), and it ensures what was learned in class is reinforced in future work.

Support
In addition to receiving the two Kidwriter books (Writing and Editing and Grammar and Punctuation), families are emailed weekly materials that enhance class activities. On the last day of class, parents join their kids for the last hour to participate in writing competitions (kids against parents) and to practice the Kidwriter Detective Editing approach.

Class Fee
$500 total (1/2 of the class fee is paid at the time of enrollment; the other half is paid at the third class of the session.)  There is an additional $40.00 material fee to cover the two Kidwriter books (which participants keep). The material fee is paid at the time of enrollment, but the books are not distributed until the first day of class. Please note that there are no refundable deposits, and all classes are filled on a first-come/first-served basis.
